Turkey fines Twitter $51,000

According to Turkey’s Information and Communications Technologies Authority (BTK), the social network  Twitter has been fined $51,000 for refusing to remove illegal contents about “terrorist propaganda, encouraging public acts of violence and hatred,”.

Turkish courts have, on several occasions, asked  Twitter to remove them, but without any positive results from the social media company.

The BTK forwarded its decision to Twitter company’s headquarters in San Francisco California and the office of its lawyer in Turkey.

If Twitter does not pay the fine, the Turkish Finance Ministry will act to collect it.

Access to social media networks Twitter and Youtube has been temporarily blocked in the past by court orders because of the same issue.
