Arabi21 stated that Masrawy, an Egyptian news website, has confirmed that the Mufti of Egypt Dr. Shawqi Allam has approved the death sentence against Mohamed Morsi, the first democratically elected president, and the other defendants in the cases known as “espionage” and “Wadi Al-Natroun prison escape”.

Masrawy quoted its special sources as saying that the mufti sent his response to the case in full secrecy to the Criminal Court. The response endorses the approval of the Dar al-Ifta on the court’s decision. The court has referred the papers of Morsi and other Muslim Brotherhood leaders as Issam Al-Iryan and Saad Al-Katatni.

According to the law, Egypt requires the endorsement of the mufti’s opinion in all the death sentences; the Mufti is asked to give the religious opinion on each case.

The news website also stated that court has also sent the papers of other 17 defendants to the mufti to say his religious opinion in the case known in the media as the “espionage case”.

According to the website, the other defendants alongside President Mohamed Morsi are Muhammad Khyrat Al-Shatir, Muhammad Al-Biltaji, Ahmad Abd Al-Aati, Sayyid Mahmoud Izzat, Mitwalli Salahuddin, Ammar Muhammad Ahmad, Fayid Al-Banna, Ahmad Rajab Sulayman, Al-Hassan Muhammad Khayrat Saad Al-Din Al-Shatir, Sundus Aasim Sayyid Shalabi, Abu Bakr Kamal Mshali, Ahmad Muhammad Hakim, Rida Fahmi Khalil, Muhammad Osama, Hussein Muhammad Al-Qazzaz, Imad Al-Din Ali Atwah and Muhammad Al-Zayyan.

President Morsi was overthrown by a military coup in July 2013, one year after he had taken office as the country’s first democratically elected leader. Amnesty International says that more than 1,400 of Morsi’s supporters have been killed since the army ousted him last July 3. Another 15,000 have been arrested as the military-installed interim authorities crack down on the Muslim Brotherhood.
