Mishaal Calls on Turkey to Continue Its Support for the Palestinian Cause

Dozens of Palestinians participated Monday in a solidarity vigil outside the Turkish consulate in occupied Jerusalem following the failed military coup attempt in Turkey. The participants raised during the vigil that was organized by the Islamic Supreme Council, the Turkish flag and chanted slogans in support of Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Head of the Supreme Council Ikrema Sabri hailed the Turkish people’s strong determination and victory over “conspiracy plans” in reference to the latest coup attempt that targeted democracy in the country.

For his part, the Turkish Ambassador, Mustafa Sarnıç, expressed gratitude to the Palestinian people over their sincere support for Turkey, stressing the strong ties between the two peoples. Last Friday, a military coup d’état in Turkey was foiled after crowds answered President Erdogan’s call to take to the streets to support him.

On the other hand, Head of Hamas’s political bureau Khaled Mishaal called Monday evening on Turkey to continue its efforts in support of the Muslim nation’s causes topped by the Palestinian cause.

In a televised interview, Mishaal hailed Turkey’s positions in support of Palestine and its ongoing efforts to end Gaza siege. Turkey has a deep responsibility towards the Palestinian cause, he said. We know very well that Turkish leadership has many things to do after the military coup attempt but it will succeed to balance between its internal and external roles, Mishaal added. “If the coup had succeeded, the Palestinians would be the big loser.” “We, in Hamas Movement, respect the values and principles of democracy and freedom”, he stressed. “We support stability of Turkey and all countries in the region”, according to his statement. He concluded by hailing the Turkish people’s courage and deep sense of responsibility.
