Syrian activists said that prominent rescue worker Khalid Harh was killed in airstrikes by the Assad regime on a civil defense center in eastern Aleppo on Thursday.
Harh became popular after he had appeared in a video recovering a 10 day old baby from under the rubble of his bombed house in Aleppo.
The Civil Defense Corps operating in the liberated areas across northern Syria has been nominated for the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize after rescuing thousands of victims of the bombardment by the Assad regime and Russian forces on rebel-held areas.
Najib Fakhoury, director of the civil defense center in the district of Alansari in eastern Aleppo was injured along with three rescue workers in airstrikes by the Assad regime on the district on Thursday.
Three other rescue workers were injured in similar attacks in the town of Saraqib in rural Idlib on Thursday while helping victims of airstrikes. Eight civilians were also injured in the airstrikes on Saraqib.
The Civil Defense Corps, also known as the White Helmets, was founded in 2013 to help victims of the aerial bombardment by the Assad regime and its Russian ally. The corps is comprised of around 2,890 volunteers working in 119 centers across the north of Syria.
