Turkey sends food aid to Yemen’s Taiz

The Türkiye Diyanet Foundation (TDV) sent 1,500 packages of food aid Wednesday for the needy in Yemen’s Taiz province

The Yemeni Association for Social Improvement and Prosperity will distribute the food aid, which was sent by the TDV in collaboration with Turkey’s Presidency of Religious Affairs (DİB, better known as Diyanet).

The association’s head Abdulkareem Shaiban said that many Yemenis in the country were living in difficult conditions and desperately needed help.

“We would like to thank Turkey for its help to the people in need in Taiz,” Shaiban said.

Yemen has remained in a state of civil war since 2014, when the Shia Houthi militia group and allied forces of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh took over the capital Sanaa and other parts of the country.

The conflict escalated a year later when Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched a major air campaign aimed at reversing Houthi gains and shoring up Yemen’s pro-Saudi government.

According to the U.N., 11.3 percent of Yemen’s population has been forcibly displaced by the conflict.
