Despite the widespread condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine across the world, yet some Arab countries supported Moscow in its recent moves, a report by The Independent has monitored.
As Russia’s invasion unfolds, several partners to Moscow broke the unanimity of condemnation of the war and Putin’s international isolation, according to a report published by The Independent on 25 February t, where the report by Ahmed Aboudouh was titled: “Friends to the end: The countries that support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine”.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine attracted sweeping condemnation from the US, the UK, European powers and other western countries. But several countries have backed Moscow over its actions., stated The Independent.
According to the report, Belarus, China, North Korea, Iran, Venezuela were the most prominent countries that supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The report also stated that Bashar Assad of Syria and the Houthis in Yemen, related to Iran, supported the Russian military activities against Ukraine
Syria
According to The Independent, Syria rushed to recognize the two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine – the Lubansk People’s Republic (LPR) and the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) – a few hours after Putin recognized them as The Independent states.
The Syrian News Agency reported that Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad said that Damascus will “cooperate” with the two regions in eastern Ukraine, the report said.
Putin has been the main supporter of the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad throughout the years of the civil war that has been raging across the country since 2011.
Assad also relies heavily on Russia to survive and rebuild his country from widespread destruction, and experts say Assad has no choice but to publicly show his support for Putin’s demands.
Al Jazeera Mubasher tweeted, saying: Touching photos of Ukrainian citizens leaving their homeland for Slovakia across the border to escape the scourge of Russia’s war on their country.
The Houthis
On the other hand, the Houthi group in Yemen also supported Russia’s recognition of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent republics, but warned of a war that would “exhaust Russian capabilities.”
Critics of the Houthis say they have received political and financial support from Russia in recent years.
Experts say that Iran, which has called for restraint but has blamed the United States and NATO for the Russian escalation, would tacitly agree to the Houthis’ declaration of support for Russia’s policies in Ukraine.
Iran is currently engaged in fierce negotiations with Western powers, Russia and China over the possible revival of the nuclear deal abandoned by the administration of former US President Donald Trump in 2018.
In recent years, Russia has sold many advanced weapons to Iran and given it diplomatic cover at the United Nations against US economic sanctions.
