Yemen, officially known as the Republic of Yemen, is an Arab country in Southwest Asia, occupying the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula.

Yemen is the second largest country in the peninsula, occupying 527,970 km² and before the war it attracted many tourists mostly because of its spectacular traditional architecture and hospitality. Latests months the country has been ravaged by a fierce war between Houthi rebels and forces loyal to the appointed. Saudi Arabia has formed a coalition in order to fight the Houti rebels. The coalition is hitting targets with Air Strikes and the attacks have caused massive destruction.

Yemen was formed in 1990 when the conservative North Yemen and socialist South Yemen were merged. At that time a democratic system with multi party system and free elections was introduced, unusual for the region. After a brief civil war in 1994, the North  dominates the north side completely. Escalating protests against the regime in 2011 led to President Saleh stepped down after three decades in power. The poor country plagued by local insurrections and a growing Islamist violence.
